Draft Memo From CJC to Campus Community

Cornell’s University Assembly (UA) is the broadest decision-making body on campus, and its Codes and Judicial Committee is charged with making recommendations to the UA for revisions to the Campus Code of Conduct and the Campus Judicial System.

Prompted by an interest expressed by the university administration, the UA recently asked the CJC report on their evaluation of the campus code and judicial system and solicit community feedback on same. President Skorton has asked the UA and the CJC to consider the Krause Report, which includes recommendations for a rewriting of the entire code and a significant modification of the judicial system, as a tool in this process of evaluation.

In order to develop a strong workable timetable for this process, the CJC has identified three areas in which it will focus its attention for the next two months. Please read the parts of the code and the Krause Report that pertain to these areas and tell us what you would change and what should remain the same.

  1. Should the UA continue to be responsible for the Code, or should the Administration take over responsibility for the content of the code?
  2. Should the Office of the Judicial Administrator continue to be independent? The Krause Report advocates dissolving the JA and moving all disciplinary actions under a new Day Hall office, reporting to the dean of students.
  3. Should the campus disciplinary code affect only students, or should faculty, staff and administrators also be bound to follow it? Should things students/faculty/staff do off-campus be subject to Cornell discipline?

Any experience you have with the JA is important us. Were you ever JA’d? Did you ever JA someone? What worked, what didn’t, and what should have been done differently?

Feel free to respond to these questions and express other concerns, http://assembly.cornell.edu/KrauseReportComments/Home here, in addition to speaking at the UA’s meetings and at other public discussions on this topic. http://assembly.cornell.edu/CJC/Meetings CJC schedule & http://assembly.cornell.edu/UA/Meetings UA schedule. We’re planning a large forum in early February for the entire community to discuss the feedback and other thoughts on possible revisions, and we’ll let you know as soon as the location is final.

We appreciate your time and input, and hope you can come to the forum in early February.

Thanks,

The Codes and Judicial Committee
