Childcare: 2007-08-02 Open Letter to the Community on Cornell's Bright Horizons Childcare Center

Dear Members of the Cornell Community,

This June, representatives from the University Assembly worked with the Office of Human Resources (OHR) and the Office of Assemblies to form an ad hoc committee on childcare in order to begin discussions on the many critical decisions associated with the establishment of the Bright Horizons childcare center. The committee was formed during the summer based on consultation with university administration, campus governance, as well as faculty and staff experts on childcare and work life. However, once the committee is formalized in the fall, most likely under the auspices of the University Assembly, membership on the committee will be open to the standard nomination process.

The present goals of the committee are to:

• Provide representation from all parts of the campus and Ithaca community
• Work with OHR and Bright Horizons on decisions related to the design and operation of the new center slated for opening in summer 2008
• Initiate a committee structure that will be formalized and made permanent in the fall 2007 semester
