January 29, 2007: GPSA Slope Day Funding Request

As discussed Monday, 29 January 2007.

Dear Members of the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly,

The Slope Day Programming Board is politely requesting funding for Slope Day 2007 in the amount of $4,000. This is the same level of funding received from the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly in the 2005–2006 academic year. We are requesting this funding in order to maintain our current level of Slope Day programming, including both the concert aspect of Slope Day and Slope Fest, the carnival-type event that runs on Ho Plaza.

The undergraduate and graduate student funds are used solely for promotion and programming on Slope Day, while a whole host of other costs from security to staffing and support are covered by the University administration. This collaboration truly represents a University-wide Partnership for the planning and funding of Slope Day.

This is a very worthwhile investment for the GPSA because while Slope Day is attended mostly by undergraduates, the data that we were able to collect on last year’s event showed that more than half of graduate students do attend, as well as staff and faculty. And we encourage Graduate and Professional Students to get more involved through planning and organization of the event by holding membership in one of the three Slope Day related boards (Slope Day Programming Board, Slope Day Steering Committee and Slope Day Logistics Committee).

I would like to stress, in considering this funding request, the importance of viewing Slope Day as the largest event which encompasses the entire Cornell Community. The presence of the graduate community is integral to that community and therefore we hope to continue fostering a good relationship with the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly in our efforts of making Slope Day appealing for all people on campus. We look forward to future collaborations with your organization and thank you for considering our request.

Sincerely,
The Slope Day Programming Board
