Resolution 9. A Joint Resolution between the GPSA and the SA Concerning the Designation of Student-Elected Trustee Seats

WHEREAS, Cornell University has had student-elected Trustees on its board since 1971; and

WHEREAS, Prior to 2006, these seats could be held by any member of the Cornell student community; and

WHEREAS, This allowed for the possibility that the two seats may be held by two graduate/professional or two undergraduate students at one time, leaving one constituency unrepresented for at least one year; and

WHEREAS, In Fall 2006, the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) and the Student Assembly (SA) jointly passed a resolution recommending that “the Cornell University Board of Trustees designate one Student Elected Trustee seat to undergraduate students and one Student Elected Trustee seat to graduate and professional students”; and

WHEREAS, The Fall 2006 resolution required that an “evaluation of the election process” be submitted to the Board by January 2011; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the GPSA and the SA jointly find that, after five years, the designation of one undergraduate seat and one graduate/professional seat has been successful.

RESOLVED, That the GPSA and the SA jointly recommend to the Board of Trustees to adopt this designation permanently.

RESOLVED, That upon passage of this resolution by both the GPSA and the SA, it shall be forwarded to Robert S. Harrison, Chairman of the Board and Robert J. Katz, Chairman of the Committee on Board Membership.

Respectfully submitted,
