February 20, 2013 Letter from President Skorton Re: R. 12

Dear Mitch:

I was pleased to receive a copy of GPSA’s Resolution 12A Resolution to Amend the GPSA Charter to Ensure Representation of Students at Cornell NYC Tech and Geneva Campuses. The Cornell NYC Tech campus is an exciting development for the university and the Geneva campus is central to our mission of public outreach. As we continue to create a vibrant and dynamic presence across the state, strengthening ties among the Geneva, Ithaca, and New York City campuses will benefit all students. I appreciate the GPSA’s interest in maintaining those connections and support having GPSA represent all graduate students for shared governance purposes, regardless of their locations.

We are pleased that you recognize the unique expectations and needs of students on all campuses. However, I suggest a slight clarification to the section of the Resolution beginning on Line 41. The offices listed (Student Activities Office, Office of the Assemblies, and the GPSA Finance Commission) will provide policy guidance and support, but operational support for students at Cornell Tech will be provided by the Cornell Tech campus staff. Therefore, I am sending this to you with a request for reconsideration. Perhaps the language could be changed to something along the lines of the following:

RESOLVED, That the staff at Cornell Tech be prepared to serve student organizations at the Cornell Tech campus with guidance from the Student Activities Office, Office of Assemblies, and GPSA Finance Commission;

Finally, please add Cathy Dove, Vice President of Cornell Tech to the recipient list, as her staff are those involved with providing student support on the campus.

Many thanks to GPSA for your commitment to fostering interaction among the campuses and ensuring all students have representation.

Regards,

David Skorton
