Response from President RE: Resolution 8

Dear Richard,

Thank you for sharing GPSA resolution 8, a “Resolution to Critique the Hiring of Associate Dean of Students for Inclusion, Engagement and Community Support and to Increase Funding to Advocacy Services, Support Resources, and Inclusion Programming.” As you note, Article II Section 2.03 of the GPSA charter does give the assembly authority to examine non-academic policies, and the GPSA plays an important role in making recommendations on these matters. While this authority does not allow the GPSA to directly decide personnel actions or reallocation of funds, your input has been helpful as we consider the strategic allocation of resources in support of diversity programming.

You have raised a concern that the proposed staff position encompasses too many responsibilities to adequately address the needs of minority students and their respective advocacy centers. The Dean of Students did consider this possibility but, in response to feedback that DOS staff had previously been too narrowly focused, envisioned this role to place several units under one umbrella. I expect this arrangement will release new energy and encourage more productive working relationships among offices that have much in common and much to share.

I will remind Dean Hubbell that he should work with both the SA and the GPSA to arrange a review of the department’s budget and priorities as such a review has not been happening on a regular basis. I also will encourage him, should he decide to proceed with the hiring, to find ways for the concerned student leaders in the SA and GPSA leadership to meet with his senior team and the new hire early in the priority-setting for this important work.

Regards,

David J. Skorton
