April 9, 2013 Letter to President Skorton Re: R. 16

Dear President Skorton,

I am pleased to present to you GPSA Resolution 16, passed at the April 8th meeting, which amends the Bylaws of the GPSA to create a Diversity & International Students Committee. The GPSA recently has been increasingly concerned with being more inclusive and focused on issues that affect our diverse student population. The GPSA takes our mission of representingall graduate and professional students seriously and we hope that the creation of this Diversity & International Students Committee will help identify ways we can be improve the Assembly.

The Graduate and Professional Community Initiative focuses, in part, on diversity and international students and one recommendation is to have the GPSA create a committee solely focused on these issues. Resolution 16 does just that. We intend for this committee to examine how the GPSA can follow the principles of the University’s Toward New Destinations framework that includes composition, engagement, inclusion, and achievement. I anticipate you will see substantial work out of this committee when it starts in the 2013–2014 GPSA!

Please let me know if you have any questions about Resolution 16.

All the best,

Mitch
