Graduate & Professional Student Assembly
Meeting of the GPSA Events Committee
October 27th, 2010
Uris Hall 255 — Levin Reading Room
6:00–7:00 P.M.

I. Welcome & Introductions

II. Zombie Bar Crawl — Last Minute Details!!

  • Can meet in Uris Hall at 7:15pm to put on makeup. Event starts at 8pm
  • Please take pictures of the event (and all future events!) Will send out information about the GPSA Shutterfly site.

III. ’Grad Bowl’ — Thursday, November 4th, 2010 (YJ Chen)

  • Volunteers to collect money at the door — Madeline will make a GoogleDoc for volunteer sign-up.
  • What about food? Do they sell food, in addition to beer, at the bowling alley?
    • We will not provide food if the concession stand is open. YJ will look into this.
  • Instructions on how to keep score. Roland will look into this.
    • Update 10/31/10: The score sheets provided by Helen Newman should be good enough.
  • Collecting money
    • Price will be $5/person instead.
    • Nicole will get money box from Assemblies Office.

IV. November Grad’s Night Out

  • Where? Who would like to organize?
    • The Palms. Elsie is looking into this.
  • Did you know that the Palms is listed as a historical site in Ithaca�

V. Inter-school Mixer: Engineering School and Biological Sciences — Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 (Nicole Baran) 7–9pm

  • Co-sponsorship with Engineering Graduate Student Association (EGSA)
  • Food & Drink Budget
    • $400 total ($200 from GPSA, $200 from EGSA)
    • Update 10/31/10: Barn has been reserved. We will give out tickets for one free drink, but students must collect three stickers from someone in the opposite field to get a drink. Food provided by Cornell Catering. Need to buy name tags, bingo stickers, and sharpies.

VI. Spa Day — Sunday, December 5th, 2010, Sartori (Madeline Smith)

  • Funding from Grad School: $500.
  • Sartori can accommodate 24 people an hour, each service costs $15. Do not need to pay in advance, but need to send names by Nov. 19th.
    • Appointments cost: $1080 for 3 hour event
    • Students pay $10/each: $720
    • We got $500 from Grad School, plus money ($300?) from our budget to subsidize $5 per person and provide light refreshments.
  • Will start a facebook page to check on initial interest in the event. Will probably get an additional hour (or two) worth of appointments, based on this.
  • Should have students sign-up for appointments in advance.
  • Students pay $10/appointment, plus tip?

VII. Other Event Updates

  • Fireside Chat with President Skorton (Nicole Baran)
    • Email has been sent. No reply yet�
  • Ithaca Science Center/ Museum of the Earth Day (YJ Chen)
    • YJ has left messages, but no reply yet�
  • Ski Day
    • Madeline will look into this. Discounted tickets to sell. Weekend date preferable. Should also include equipment rental.
  • International Food Day/Cooking Contest (Roland Foss)
    • Roland will contact Nutrition Students Organization who planned a similar event to see whether it would be worth it to pursue one of our own next semester.

VIII. Grad Ball Update

  • Date: Friday, April 1st, 2010, WSH
  • The “First Annual Graduate Student Ball” — Storytime!
    • Walt Boehme (MBA, Class of 1962) claims to have planned the first Graduate Students Ball in 1962. “Ho! Wait a minute! I started the first annual Grad. Student Ball in 1962 when I was in the then called Grad. School of Business and Public Admin., to bring together the total Grad. School as well as the MBA Program. It was was a big success, and I was the MC. The theme was “I’ll Take Manhattan”.”
    • Michael Walsh is looking into the archives for information on the event. Will send updated information in a few weeks.
    • Update 10/29/10: The first Grad student formal actually occurred in 1902. Clearly, we should discuss how to incorporate this history theme into the event.
  • Theme ideas?
    • 1920’s theme? 1960’s “Mad Men” theme, “I’ll Take Manhattan”

IX. Marketing Ideas — How can we reach more students??

  • Screens at BRB, Law School, Business School
  • Sending emails through Hasbrouk and Maplewood
