From the Cornell Assemblies

SA Comments: Legislative Scope

Initial Findings

The Student Assembly has been charged with providing legislative oversight for the Dean of Students Office and the Division of Campus Life. The Student Assembly provides a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on the Student Activity Fee, and manages the disbursement of funds for the upcoming cycle.

The Student Assembly has found itself focused on a number of issues that may or may not be within the scope of its oversight. Resolutions that are focused on subjects beyond campus have created considerable controversy. They have left questions in the minds of many undergraduates about how the assembly chooses to allocate its time.

Potential Solutions

  1. The Student Assembly should begin a discussion about what is considered ‘fair game’ for assembly discourse. The Student Assembly must recognize that resolutions and discussion periods should be limited only to those subjects that will directly affect undergraduates and their Cornell experience.

The executive team should ensure rules are followed by byline funded organizations and SAFC funded organizations. This will actually demonstrate the real legislative power the SA has.
