SA Committee on Residence and Community Life Meeting
Goldwin Smith 162
October 6, 2009

  • Reviewed/Revised RHD Resolution
  • Suggestions for/Comments on RHD Resolution
    • Make it known that program houses are distinct
      • Create committee made of people who live or have lived in program houses
      • Traditional residential halls tend not to have strong ties with RHD
    • Make distinction between selecting RHD for program houses and traditional residential halls
      • RHD transfers are case-by-case situations (programs vs. traditional)
    • Change “dormitories” to “residential halls” to stay consistent
    • Position may be too much for one student
      • Try having subcommittees made up of a student from each building
      • The representative would report to this subcommittee as the executive representative
      • They would discuss interviewing/selection process
    • Issue with large involvement of students
      • with confidential information involved in interviewing/selection process
      • Burke is hesitant about extensive student involvement due to confidential information
    • Remove “The final candidate must be approved by the Director of Residential Programs.”
      • Too much power given to Director of Residential Life may lead to him disregarding student voice
      • He should not have any say; the representative is meant to solely represent the student body
    • Find ways to increase student voice outside of the board since the representative may be overpowered by board of administrators
    • Better to have someone currently living on campus
      • This would be overlooked if ideal student lived off-campus
    • Representative should live somewhere on the east coast not too far from university
      • Transfer process during the summer will be essential for him/her to be present
    • Inform community on when decision-making for the transferring process among halls, where continued occupancy is common, is taking place
      • Release of information on a certain date
      • Create joint committee, that represents community, to meet with Burke when decisions are being made for transferring of RHD’s of continued occupancy halls
    • Deadline will not be respected since it makes no difference to administrators whether or not they meet it
    • Add “Where have you lived in previous years?” onto application
    • No term limit, but must reapply every year
    • Two representatives: one to represent programs and one to represent traditional
      • First ask for two votes
    • Option #1: Pass as is, then tackle distinguishing between programs and traditional later on
      • Does this make us seem unorganized and unsure?
      • Does it make us seem progressive and determined?
    • Option #2: Continue to revise it, and pass it later on
    • Have representative(s) report to RSC and us (Res. Life); at least monthly or at discretion of committees
