DRAFT for 3/28/07 UA meeting:

______________

Dear President Skorton:

We, the Cornell University Assembly, herewith forward to you the interim report of our Codes and Judicial Committee on the Campus Code of Conduct. We have also attached our Resolution #5 (Concerning Campus Code Review), which we passed, by a vote of 14 to 0 (with one abstention) at our 14 March meeting.

The CJC report is a document that represents the thoughts and insights of the Cornell community, garnered through open fora, open meetings, and an open website. The wide participation from diverse constituencies of the university was an educational experience in itself, and showed that the Cornell community takes its self-governance very seriously.

As is evident from the strength of our support for the CJC report, the UA is committed to continue the review of the Campus Code that is recommended by the CJC, in the context of the current Code and Judicial System, and to enact revisions that promote clarity and accountability, without abridging the rights of the accusers and the accused. We respectfully request that your office provide all the support necessary for the University Assemblies office and the Codes and Judicial Committee to continue that work during the time specified in the CJC report.

Sincerely,

Members of the UA
