May 17, 2011 Letter from President Skorton

Dear Charlie,

I am writing to approve the UA’s proposed amendment that alters the Campus Code of Conduct as stated below. I understand that the UA proposed this amendment, at this time, to comply with this requirement from the “Dear colleague” letter, and nothing more.

As it should, the UA has acted in accordance with its shared governance responsibility in overseeing the Campus Code; and I understand that in considering this issue, it has aired varying viewpoints in arriving at its prevailing judgment.

Accepting the proposed amendment, however, does not end the work that needs to be done; I view the change as an interim measure to address OCR’s recent mandate regarding Title IX. I believe strongly that we, as a campus, should thoughtfully consider, through the proper policy approval processes, long-term revisions to both the Campus Code and Policy 6.4 to accommodate OCR’s directive and Cornell’s traditions and values. I expect that the responsible administrative colleagues, as well as members of the UA and CJC, will engage in these critical discussions in the near future.

Thanks again.

Regards,

David
