June 4, 2013 Letter from the President Re: R. 6 and R. 7

Dear Joy,

I am writing in response to Resolution 6, Security Design Mandate for New Buildings on Campus, and Resolution 7, Calling for Increase Surveillance and Lockdown Procedure. I consulted Vice President KyuJung Whang in reviewing the recommendations contained in these resolutions.

In response to Resolution 6, I can report that Facilities Services has been working with Cornell Police to establish a building security committee to discuss the potential security requirements of major new projects at key developmental milestones. Additionally, Facilities Services will explore the possibility of amending the Project Manager’s (PM) guide to include guidance on the tiered requirements of proposed buildings and report back to the UA on its progress during the next academic year.

In response to Resolution 7, I understand that a committee has been established that meets monthly with membership from Facilities Services specifically Facilities Management and the Cornell Police to discuss matters related to access control and security. This committee looks at the issues raised in the resolution. All small projects are tracked and partnered with CUPD to assure that the proper access control systems are installed when projects are executed. The committee will report to the UA periodically during the next academic year regarding its findings and recommendations with respect to issues identified in the resolution.

Regards,

David
