Letter to President Skorton Re: R. 4: Resolution to Modify Campus Code to Disclose Misconduct of University Registered Organizations

Dear President Skorton,

Attached for your approval is University Assembly (UA) Resolution #4, “Resolution to Modify Campus Code to Disclose Misconduct of University Registered Organizations.”

This Resolution would authorize the university official responsible for administering the Campus Code, the Office of the Judicial Administrator, to disclose findings of misconduct by registered student organizations and other organizations officially registered with the university (not just Greek-letter organizations or athletic teams as is currently the case) when that organization has been found in violation of the Campus Code and the information would be of educational or informational value to the community.

This is an update to an earlier Resolution which you returned to the UA on May 8, 2013. In your May 8 reply to that earlier Resolution, you stated you supported the intent, but had some concerns with the implementing language. In your response (copy attached), you proposed alternate language.

Current Status: The University Assembly and it’s Codes and Judicial Committee have reviewed your proposed language and fully accepted it with one administrative change. In line 51 of the newly passed Resolution (attached), we have used the term “deemed necessary” where your proposed language had the phrase “deemed necessary or advisable”. In the context of this Resolution, Assembly Members felt “or advisable” was too broad and brought into question ‘advisable by whom”. All other wording is exactly as you proposed. This Resolution passed the UA unanimously. We hope our one administrative adjustment will be acceptable.

Best,
-Jim
