R. 9: Resolution Regarding a Fall 2006 Voter Registration Drive

Introduced Thursday, 14 September 2006.

Whereas, the Student Assembly has both the authority and the responsibility to examine any matters which involve the interests or concern the welfare of the student community and to make proposals concerning these issues as pursuant to Section 1.3 of the SA Charter;

Whereas, the local and national mid-term elections of November 2006 represent the manifestation of the ideals of American democracy and unequivocally fall within the sphere of those things that concern the welfare of the student community at the most basic level;

Whereas, the Student Assembly is itself a civic body with an elected membership and therefore has the implicit obligation of galvanizing the students it represents to take an active role in voting and participating in civil government at all levels of American society;

Whereas, a voter registration drive is the perfect vehicle through which the Student Assembly can pursue such an objective;

Whereas, the independent student group Mock Elections shares this same objective, outlined specifically in its description on the website of the Cornell Student Activities Office wherein its members state their intention of conduct[ing] a massive voter registration drive early in the Fall 2006 semester with student political organizations and participating administrators and university departments;

Whereas, the Cornell University Office of Government and Community Relations has requested the Student Assemblys assistance and support in making Cornell students aware of and privy to all information and materials necessary for registering to vote;

Be it therefore resolved that the Student Assembly join with Mock Elections to successfully coordinate and conduct a voter registration drive prior to Election Day of 2006 and pledge both its manpower and the full weight of its influence to the achievement of this end.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Coombs 08 Executive Vice President

Herbie Ziskend 07 Chair, Mock Elections Former SA Representative
