Resolution Regarding Transportation to and from Campus

Whereas, the transportation cost for students going to and from campus using local bussing services is substantially higher than if the Student Assembly would itself charter buses for students, thus ensuring them a good deal and stimulating other bussing services to provide more competitive prices;

Whereas, a number of Cornell students who are from the New York City area use the Short Line bus service when traveling to and from campus, the cost of a one-way ticket on said service approximately $40 and a round-trip ticket $80;

Whereas, the cheapest current transportation service available for students to travel to Syracuse Hancock International Airport is the Ithaca Airline Limousine, where a one-way ride is approximately $60 and a round-trip ticket $95, the cost for a one-way ticket to Syracuse more expensive than a ticket to NYC;

Whereas, the typical cost of chartering a 50-passenger bus is around $1000, which would average to a cost of $20 per student, almost 1/3 the cost of a trip to the airport in Syracuse, and half the cost for a trip to NYC;

Whereas, there are a number of charter bus companies available that could be utilized to reduce costs as such, each included on the attachment;

Whereas, the Student Assembly would not need to finance any of the cost of the busses, since it would be entirely funded by the students benefiting from the reduced price;

Be it therefore resolved that the SA create an ad hoc committee to be led by the signatory of this resolution, its purpose that of researching alternative transportation methods to airports and other destinations for the benefit of the student body traveling to and from campus;

Be it further resolved that a report of the committee�s findings is to be issued within four meetings to the Assembly consisting of the exact costs and methods necessary to ensure cheaper transportation.
