R.10 Town Gown Community Award

Whereas, according to the Ithaca Journal in 2007 more than 13 percent of those residing in Tompkins County have a salary below the poverty line,

Whereas, the Ithaca Journal also reported in 2007 that 25 percent of households in Tompkins County have incomes less than $20,000.

Whereas, the Ithaca Journal also reported that only 37 of the 2,321 employers in the county in 2007 are certified as living wage employers

Whereas, there are numerous student groups on campus engaged in service projects to better the Ithaca community,

Whereas, in the Spring 2009 semester an ad hoc Cornell-Collegetown Student Committee was created to enhance the relationship between Cornell and the Ithaca city government, provide information on local governance issues to students, mobilize student interest and lobbying efforts, brainstorm ideas for the improvement of Collegetown and work with the Ithaca Common Council to ensure that Collegetown is a community that serves the interests of Cornell students.

Be it therefore resolved, that an award be given to the Cornell undergraduate student group that most benefits the Ithaca community,

Be it further resolved, that an award be given to the local Ithaca organization that most contributes to Cornell undergraduate student life,

Be it finally resolved, that these awards shall be determined and presented on behalf of the Student Assembly by the Cornell-Collegetown Student Committee by the end of the Spring 2010 semester to encourage and promote good faith efforts by both university students and Ithaca residents
