R.22 Reinstatement of Mr. Kenneth Glover as the Residential Housing Director of Ujamma Residential College

Originally Presented On:November 5, 2009
Sponsors:Ebony Ray ‘10, Olamide Williams ‘10
Subject of Resolution:Reinstatement of Mr. Kenneth Glover as the Residential Housing Director of Ujamma Residential College
Type of Action:Legislation
Status/Result:Business of the Day

Whereas, On Monday, June 29, 2009, Mr. Glover, the Residence Hall Director (RHD) of Ujamaa Residential College, met with Joseph Burke, the Director of Campus Life Residential Programs, upon Mr. Burke’s request. Here, Mr. Burke notified Mr. Glover that he was being reassigned to be the RHD of High Rise 5 (one of three large undergraduate dormitories on North Campus) and that a replacement RHD for Ujamaa was already chosen.

Whereas, many students across campus took issue with the abrupt decision to reassign Mr. Glover from his post as RHD at Ujamaa Residential College where he has been for twenty years, saying that the removal of Mr. Glover from Ujamaa Residential College eliminates a major form of support for students.

Whereas, the decision was made over the summer without the presence of students and with no effort to properly consult them.

Whereas, the administration responded to student, faculty, and alumni outcry by reinstating Mr. Glover for the 2009–2010 academic year, during which they will conduct a national search for a new Ujamaa RHD, thereby preventing Mr. Glover from having substantial input and influence on the direction of Ujamaa following the release of the recommendations from the Program House Review.

Whereas, the Ujamaa community was founded in September of 1972 by students out of struggle and a sense of self-determination.

Whereas, Article 1.1, entitled Legislative Authority Over Policies of the Student Assembly Charter states The Student Assembly (herein after referred to as the SA) will have legislative authority over the policies of the Department of Campus Life and the Office of the Dean of Students, and have the authority to review the budgets and actions of said departments.

Whereas, the Student Assembly passed Resolution 15 entitled “Increased Student Representation in Residence Hall Director Selections” stating the residential quality of life for students is greatly impacted by the performance of their RHD; therefore that two undergraduate student representatives be placed as voting members on; which resolved that selected undergraduate students, in addition to the RAs, will participate in RHD interviews with the ability to ask questions and receive feedback from candidates and that these evaluations will be used to guide the RHD transfer process.

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly requests that Mr. Glover shall not be removed from his current position as RHD of Ujamaa until the Screening Committee for Residence Hall Director selections for the Office of Residential Programs has conducted a thorough review according to the stipulations in Resolution 15.

Be it further resolved, that after this review if the committee deems his removal necessary then it is justified and must be accepted.

Be it finally Resolved, that this resolution be sent to President David Skorton, Vice President of Student and Academic Services Susan Murphy, Residential Programs Director Joseph Burke, Assistant Vice President for Student and Academic Services Marty Rauker, and Dean of Students Kent Hubbell.

Respectfully submitted,
