Resolution 47

Whereas, the Student Assembly has the potential to engage the student body, create a culture of public service and encourage a campus-wide commitment to community service.

Whereas, the Student Assembly does not currently oversee any community service initiatives on campus nor partner with the Public Service Center to encourage public service.

Whereas, the Public Service Center has served as the hub for student, faculty and alumni civic engagement activities since 1991.

Whereas, neither the Student Assembly, nor the Office of the Dean of Students currently maintain a consolidated list of service, service-learning and advocacy student organizations on campus.

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly creates the Student Assembly Public Service ad-hoc Committee:

In an effort to uphold the land grant mission of the University, the Student Assembly Public Service Committee will work to promote a commitment to public service on the Cornell campus, in Greater Ithaca, the United States and throughout the world.

The primary charge of the Student Assembly Public Service Committee will be to connect student service organizations with a public service interest to each other and to the Cornell Public Service Center. This three-way collaboration will enhance student participants experience and ability to deliver effective and meaningful community engagement activities. The Committee will create a strong platform for collaboration between service-minded organizations on campus. Through creation of this committee and by connecting with the Cornell Public Service Center, a dialogue between the organizations will commence and collective use of resources across various service initiatives will be established.

Furthermore, the collaboration will work to promote and establish standards of excellence for all public service initiatives and organizations on campus.

The Student Assembly Public Service committee shall consist of at least one SA member who will chair the Committee, at least five undergraduate students at-large, an additional five undergraduate at-large students who represent service organizations on campus, a liaison from the Intafraternity Council, a liaison from the Panhellenic Association, and at least one representative from the Public Service Center. Additional members may be selected by the Committee.

Be it further resolved, that the Committee in collaboration with the Public Service Center and student organizations will work to enhance the visibility of public service opportunities through the creation of a comprehensive SA-sponsored guide to all available service initiatives.

Be it further resolved, that the Committee will create advertisement campaigns to publicize the service and service-learning opportunities that students can engage in through the Public Service Center.

Be it further resolved, that the Committee will help coordinate campus-wide student fundraising and organization efforts between student clubs and organizations during times of great humanitarian need (such as the Earthquake in Haiti, January, 2010).
