R. 50 Requiring Deans to Speak at SA Meetings

Whereas, Section 1.6 of the Student Assembly Charter states, “The SA will have the authority and responsibility to conduct public hearings, forums, and referendums concerning topics of current student interest, and to determine in other appropriate ways student needs and opinions.”

Whereas, the Student Assembly is striving to increase transparency in its practices.

Whereas, President Skorton has requested to be invited to more SA meetings in an effort to open the lines of communication between students, the SA, and the Administration.

Whereas, student involvement is crucial to the functioning of the university.

Whereas, students are often misinformed or uninformed of issues until decisions affecting them have already been made.

Whereas, in these times of financial hardship, difficult decisions are being made and the student body is becoming ever more concerned.

Whereas, College Deans are responsible for ensuring that their students are well-informed of the challenges that the college is facing and what steps are being taken to curtail and remedy the issues.

Whereas, last week the SA and the student body had a fruitful discussion with Dean Lepage of the College of Arts and Sciences;

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly advocates on behalf of the student body that each college dean should attend an SA meeting at least once a year to brief the student body on new initiatives, plans, and to answer any lingering questions.

Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly welcomes all deans and administrators to speak at multiple meetings to share any information they may have and to get feedback from students.

Be it finally resolved, that this resolution and a letter from the Student Assembly further explaining the importance of the matter be forwarded to the seven College Deans of the University.

Respectfully submitted,
