Resolution 61. Marcellus Shale Drilling Committee

Whereas, the Student Assembly passed a resolution formulated by the Student Assembly Environmental Committee regarding the drilling for gas in the Marcellus Shale.

Whereas, one clause in that resolution reads as follows: “Be it therefore resolved, that the students of Cornell University hereby recommend that President David Skorton form a committee composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators.”

Whereas, one intention of this clause was to underscore the importance of full representation of the entire Cornell community and of transparency in the process of decision making that is essential in this highly visible and public issue.

Whereas, it has come to the attention of the Student Assembly that no undergraduate student has been appointed to the committee that has been formed pursuant to this resolution.

Whereas, there is a considerable student interest and involvement in this issue, and consistent with the University Assembly and Faculty Senate resolutions,

Be it therefore resolved, that the students of Cornell University strongly request that undergraduate students be represented on this committee in all of its deliberations.

Respectfully submitted,
