Resolution 46
Whereas, the student body at Cornell University is legally deprived of the inalienable rights set forth by the Constitution of the United States on account of Cornell’s status as a private university.
Whereas, the only clear and unifying document concerning student life is the Campus Code of Conduct, which does not speak directly to students’ rights.
Whereas, a freestanding document administered and defended by the Cornell University Student Assembly would ensure that the natural rights of students are defended under any and all conditions.
Whereas, the ‘Student Bill of Rights’ could be considered the only thorough policy document able to guarantee students all freedoms befitting an academic university.
Whereas, an Ad-Hoc Committee could meet with Cornell scholars and administrators to draft a new policy document that would outline the ‘Student Bill of Rights.’
Whereas, an Ad-Hoc Committee could organize a Student Assembly “Speak Up” event to find out what rights the student body believes should be included.
Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly form an Ad-Hoc Committee to Explore the drafting of a Student Bill of Rights.
Be it further resolved, that the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Student Bill of Rights be Chaired by Andrew Brokman, At-Large Representative, who will regularly report committee updates to the entire Student Assembly.
Respectfully submitted,
Andrew Brokman ‘11 At-Large Representative
