Student Assembly

Whereas, Cornell University enacted a hiring freeze at the height of the financial crisis, leading to the failure to hire a second full-time employee under the LGBT Resource Center for the position of Assistant Dean of Students for LGBT Life; and

Whereas, the position of Assistant Dean of Students for LGBT Life under the LGBT Resource Center remains unstaffed, as does a third full-time position for an administrative assistant; and

Whereas, the job description for the aforementioned Assistant Dean of Students position states that the full-time employee should spend approximately 40% of their time as the adviser for the byline funded student organization Haven: The LGBTQ Student Union, in addition to approximately 35% of their time participating in de facto advising through programming and outreach support; and

Whereas, the role of adviser to Haven: The LGBTQ Student Union does not appear in the job description of any other administrative position; and

Whereas, Haven: The LGBTQ Student Union has gone without an adviser since at least the Spring 2008 academic semester;

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly asks the administration of Cornell University to hire a qualified full-time employee for the position of Assistant Dean of Students for LGBT Life by the end of the Fall 2011 academic semester; and

Be it further resolved, that a representative of Haven: The LGBTQ Student Union be allowed to participate meaningfully in the hiring process for the Assistant Dean of Students position.
