S.A. Resolution #22: Reevaluating the Appointment of Grant Farred as Chair of Africana Faculty Search Committee

Sponsored by: Dara Brown ‘13

Whereas, Professor Grant Farred was appointed to the Africana faculty search committee on September 14th, 2011.

Whereas, on February 5th, 2010 Farred made a racial and sexist comment towards two black graduate students, calling them “black bitches.”

Whereas, this appointment illustrates the University’s failure to properly address sexist comments and their effects on many members of our student body.

Whereas, it is inexcusable for this campus to condone sexist remarks such as these, and this appointment raises concerns about the environment for women on Cornell’s campus.

Whereas, the administration must reexamine the message that it is sending across campus in appointing Farred to chair the Africana faculty search committee.

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly recommend the Arts and Science administration to formally reevaluate the appointment of Grant Farred, and to take similar concerns into account in the future.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dara Brown ‘13
