S.A. Resolution #28: Recognizing Indigenous Day on the Academic Calendar

Sponsored by: Ulysses Smith ‘13, Andrea Carter ‘12, Abraham Francis ‘14, Joshua Crofton-MacDonald ‘12, Alyssa Segal ‘12

Whereas, Cornell University sits on lands that historically belonged to the Cayuga people;

Whereas, Cornell prides itself on its diverse student population and strives to include students from all backgrounds;

Whereas, the University continues to work on improving its relationship with Native people;

Whereas, the American Indian Program and Akwe:kon were created to provide both academic and social support for Native students on campus;

Whereas, Indigenous People’s Day is a day to recognize the nation’s first people;

Whereas, some states are considering no longer recognizing Columbus Day, with Hawaii, South Dakota, and Alaska no longer observing this day;

Whereas, a number of universities and cities are officially recognizing Indigenous People’s Day;

Be it therefore resolved, that any calendar distributed by the university, with the exception of the academic calendar, officially recognize International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on August 9 each year from this day forward.

Be it finally resolved, that Columbus Day also be recognized as Tano Remembrance Day on the aforementioned calendars every year from this day forward.
