S.A. Resolution #31: Recognition of `AIDS Awareness Week'

Sponsored by: Nate Treffeisen ‘12

Whereas, the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, and a likely early death.

Whereas, the HIV virus is primarily spread by unprotected sex, sharing of needles and equipment to prepare illegal drugs, and from mother to child during birth.

Whereas, an estimated 33.3 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS in 2009, and during that year an estimated 42,959 new diagnosis were made in the US alone.

Whereas, research and treatment for HIV/AIDS has made many advances in recent years, yet there is still no medical cure in existence and treatments often have many side effects.

Whereas, HIV/AIDS has the ability to affect anyone, and is being diagnosed at highest rates among those age 20–24.

Whereas, this year’s World AIDS Day theme has been designated as “Getting to Zero,” or zero AIDS-related deaths, backed by the United Nations.

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly recognizes the week of November 28th, 2011 through December 2nd, 2011 as AIDS Awareness Week.

Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly encourages all students to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted disease for the benefit of their health, the health of the entire Cornell and greater Ithaca community, and peace of mind.

Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly encourages safe sexual practices and environments, and encourages students be proactive in learning how they can be safe.

Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly remembers all people who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS, and supports those who are living with the disease today, here and around the world.

Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly supports the goal of “Getting to Zero,” and the effort to one day have zero AIDS-related deaths.
