October 24, 2012 Letter To President Re: R. 19
Dear President Skorton,
I would like to formally communicate Student Assembly Resolution 19, “Support for the Allocation of Space to the Cornell Outing Club,” sponsored by S.A. CALS Representative Sarah Balik and Outing Club President Brendan Brown. The resolution passed unanimously (23–0−0) at last Thursday’s S.A. meeting.
The resolution is in response to recent circumstances involving the Cornell Outing Club’s storage facility. The Cornell Outing Club was recently asked by Cornell Facilities Management to evacuate Japes Lodge, its storage facility since 1958, due to excessive water damage. However, Facilities Management did not provide the Outing Club with an alternative space to store their equipment or hold meetings.
The resolution asks that Cornell work with the Outing Club to find a comparable space, whether temporary or permanent by November 15, 2012 (the date the Outing Club was asked to move out of its current facility) in order for the organization to keep operating and benefiting the Cornell community.
S.A. members cited the Outing Club as one of the only clubs on campus that provides students with the ability to explore Beebe Lake and safe alternatives to swimming in the gorges. Members further believed that the club fosters student leadership, independence and appreciation for nature and environmental stewardship. Additionally, they believed that the club’s activities are a great outlet for stress-relief and provide students with experiences that are unique to Cornell’s campus. The Student Assembly wholeheartedly agrees that the Outing Club should have a storage facility.
I have attached Resolution 19 for reference. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Adam
