Resolution 21: Calling for the Hire of an Associate Dean of L.G.B.T.Q. Outreach

Sponsored by: Dean Iwaoka ‘13, Emily Bick ‘13, Roneal Desai ‘13, Ulysses Smith ‘13, Ross Gitlin ‘15

Whereas, in the Spring of 2011 the Student Assembly unanimously passed Resolution 86calling for the hire of an Associate Dean of L.G.B.T.Q Outreach; and

Whereas, this position at the LGBT Resource Center remains unstaffed, and there are no current plans proposed or position searches being conducted; and

Whereas, the job description for this second position states that the individual should spend approximately 40% of their time as the adviser for the byline funded student organization Haven: The LGBTQ Student Union (Haven), 35% of their time dedicated to program development, and 25% of their time as support staff at the Center for Intercultural Dialogue; and

Whereas, the role of adviser to Haven does not appear in the job description of any other administrative position; and

Whereas, Haven has gone without an adviser for over four years; and

Whereas, Haven operates and maintains a substantial budget without administrative assistance on a yearly basis while all other by-line funded organizations have permanent advisors; and

Whereas, the current campus climate as reflected in the numerous bias incidents illustrates that the needs of the LGBTQ students could not be greater, and further inaction on the part of the Student Assembly and the University Administration threatens to undercut the programming and outreach efforts of Haven as well as to add undue stress to the student organization during by-line funding application years;

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly asks the administration of Cornell University seek to fill a second full-time position for the LGBT Resource Center as soon as possible; and

Be it further resolved, that a representative of Haven: The LGBTQ Student Union be allowed to participate meaningfully in the hiring process for the aforementioned position.

Respectfully submitted,
