S.A. Resolution # 22: Orientation Education Program

Sponsored by: Anisha Chopra ‘13, Melissa Lukasiewicz ‘14, Geoffrey Block ‘14 Narda Terrones ‘14

Whereas, recent events have demonstrated the lack of a unified educational program regarding all issues of personal health and safety on this campus

Whereas, Cornellians come from diverse backgrounds and thus have varying levels of exposure to these topics

Whereas, New Student Orientation (NSO) is the first and only opportunity to engage all new students at once

Whereas, NSO is therefore the ideal time to educate Cornellians about issues that have been increasingly prevalent on our campus

Whereas, the Student Assembly feels these issues can be mitigated through appropriate communication and dialogue

Whereas, informing and educating students in this manner will not only improve awareness regarding their personal health and safety, but will also promote all Cornellians to contribute to a campus culture of safety, community, and equality

Whereas, current efforts during NSO are fragmented and therefore ineffective

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly urges the Orientation Steering Committee along with various related groups establish a comprehensive program regarding Personal Safety - including but not limited to education about consent, sexual violence, good samaritan law, mental health, and diversity administered to all First Year Students

Be it therefore further resolved, that the SA work with the OSC to partner with relevant organizations to develop the most effective and comprehensive program

Be it therefore further resolved, that such a program is implemented by Orientation Week in Fall 2013
