Resolution 47: Formally Establishing the Collegetown Student Council
Sponsored by: Eric Silverberg ‘14, Sarah Balik ‘14, Ulysses Smith ‘13
Whereas, the Cornell Collegetown Student Council was established in 2012 by students concerned about issues in Collegetown;
Whereas, the group aims to promote economic development, maintain strong community relations, and ensure student safety and security;
Whereas, over half of the student population lives in off-campus housing;
Whereas, the Student Assembly desires to help represent these students effectively, and communicate their needs to the University and the greater Ithaca community;
Be it therefore resolved, that the SA establish the Collegetown Student Council as an ad-hoc committee for the 2013–2014 academic year by adopting the charge below:
Collegetown Student Council - The committee shall maintain jurisdiction over all off campus housing initiatives and make recommendations to the Assembly with respect to changing policies both in Collegetown and other off-campus sites. The committee shall address issues facing students vis-a-vis fellow students, landlords, and residents in order to foster a shared sense of community and produce a more vibrant neighborhood. These issues may include, but are not limited to, promoting economic development; maintaining strong community relations; and ensuring the safety and security of all students in Collegetown. The committee shall aim to make policy recommendations to the Collegetown Neighborhood Council, Student Assembly, Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Letter Council, and Panhellenic Council. The committee shall consist of one Chair; at least one SA member; at least one member of the following: Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Letter Council; and at least four additional undergraduate students. Members shall serve a one-year term. The SA VP of Internal Operations shall staff the committee and a Chair will be elected internally. The Assistant Dean of Students in the Office of Fraternity Sorority & Independent Living, a staff member from the Off-Campus Housing Office, or his/her designee, will serve ex-officio.
Be it further resolved, that the current administration of the council remain in place for that term.
