October 22, 2013 President Response Re: R. 8
Dear Ulysses,
Thank you for forwarding SA Resolution 8, Diversity Plan 2013–14. While I appreciate the Student Assembly’s work to educate the community on diversity, I have a few issues I would like to address.
First, it is not clear to me that the SA has taken into consideration the issues I brought forward last spring when Resolution 45, United Student Body was presented. Did you partner with SLECA (previously SAO) to address my questions about the conflict in the wording of the resolution that encourages student organizations to implement diversity and inclusion vs. the ability of the SA to revoke an organization’s status if they do not? Also, did you address limiting the reach to these organizations where the SA can provide that level of involvement?
Secondly, I believe that the section titled “Committee Examination” a bit problematic. If you collect such data, the resolution needs to indicate that providing such information is purely voluntary, anonymous, and in the aggregate. I would suggest a voluntary survey site in which members can login anonymously and answer the questions, if they want. This would be more appropriate than a “formal membership examination.” Please also note that if this information is collected, it cannot be used to make decisions on committee membership.
Lastly, I encourage you to take advantage of the many training programs offered by offices throughout the university as you implement diversity trainings with SA members.
Therefore, I am returning this resolution for reconsideration.
Regards,
David
