November 3, 2013 Letter To President Re: R. 16

Dear President Skorton,

I would like to formally communicate R.16: Revision of Arts & Sciences Government Pre-enrollment. The resolution is sponsored by Arts & Sciences Representative Brandon Thompson and passed unanimously at the 10/31 SA meeting.

The resolution is a formal recommendation to the Government Department in the College of Arts & Sciences to allow students to register for a discussion section at the time of online course selection. Currently, students are only allowed to select a lecture. It is only when they arrive in the class at the beginning of the semester that they learn that the class has a discussion section component, and that they will need to sign up for a section time.

This creates an undue burden on students and only complicates scheduling, sometimes even forcing students to drop the course due to scheduling conflicts. If accepted by the Government department, the Student Assembly would like to see the recommendations implemented by course selection for Fall 2014.

The resolution is attached for reference. As requested in the resolution, I have also included the chair of the Faculty Senate EPC, the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Government Department.

Best,

Ulysses
