December 6th, 2013 Letter to President Re: R. 42

Dear President Skorton,

On behalf of the Student Assembly, I would like to formally communicate Resolution 42: Student Activity Fee Allocation 2014–2016. The resolution is the culmination of the work done by the Appropriations Committee this semester, led by Vice President of Finance, Geoffrey Block.

The proposed allocation for the SAF for undergraduate students is $236.00. This amount is within the bounds of the desired percentage of growth for the fee.

This byline funding cycle, we received two new applications from groups seeking to become part of the fee. Ultimately, those groups did not receive funding, but were directed to alternative sources. We also had a number of discussions surrounding particular groups, and in some cases the recommendations of the Appropriations Committee were overturned.

I am incredibly grateful for the work of the Appropriations Committee and the members of the Student Assembly. Each of them put in long hours to read through the budget packets and come up with fair allocations. This process would not have been possible for me to get through without the leadership of Geoff Block. He has worked tirelessly with each group and the Assembly members to ensure that the process was fair and that students were getting the most out of the money that was spent.

Next semester, we will be evaluating organization-specific guidelines in Appendix B of our Charter to finish this process. We will also be proposing changes to our Charter based on the feedback and need for clarification that arose during this semester. This process also revealed some deep-rooted issues that we will seek to address through many difficult discussions and future legislation.

In the meantime, I am thrilled to say that this part is over and we can all enjoy the much-needed break. The resolution and its appendix are attached for your reference.

Regards,

Ulysses
