1.  About

The University Hearing and Review Board is the pool of students, staff, and faculty who serve on the panels that hear and review cases brought by the Office of the Judicial Administrator against members of the Cornell community.

2.  General Introduction

Cornell entrusts the entire university community with the responsibility for maintaining, interpreting, and executing decisions based upon the Campus Code of Conduct.

One can view the Cornell community as dividing naturally into three constituencies: the students, the faculty, and the non-faculty employees. Each of these constituencies has representatives in the University Assembly (UA), which is the governing body that oversees the Campus Code. The UA works with the Codes and Judicial Committee (CJC) in interpreting and recommending revisions to the Campus Code. The CJC is also responsible for interviewing student and employee candidates for the University Hearing & Review Board. Upon review of the applications, the CJC makes recommendations to the UA, and the UA appoints candidates to the board.

3.  The Application Process

Through the online applications, the CJC hopes to obtain enough information to make recommendations to the UA so as to assemble the best possible Hearing and Review Board. The process is not intended as a quiz on the Campus Code or on the campus judicial system, although the CJC expects a familiarity with both.

The UA seeks Judicial Board members whose judgment is sound and who are able to process facts rationally and independently. Board candidates must be aware of the possibility that their personal views might in some cases conflict with the Campus Code’s provisions, and that in such situations the Code must take precedence as a foundation for judgment. The application asks about your past interactions (if any), and the past interactions (if any) of your acquaintances, with the campus judicial system.

You will be asked to describe those qualities you deem most important in a Judicial Board member and how you exemplify them, and you will be asked to reply to hypothetical situations based on actual past Judicial Board.
