Legislative Scope

This page contains comments posted by members of the Cornell community pertaining to Legislative Scope in the Student Assembly. Before posting to this forum, please read the comments below to make sure that the information you are providing is pertinent to the discussion. Comments are especially valuable if they add new information or points of view.

Initial Findings

The Student Assembly has been charged with providing legislative oversight for the Dean of Students Office and the Division of Campus Life. The Student Assembly provides a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on the Student Activity Fee, and manages the disbursement of funds for the upcoming cycle.

The Student Assembly has found itself focused on a number of issues that may or may not be within the scope of its oversight. Resolutions that are focused on subjects beyond campus have created considerable controversy. They have left questions in the minds of many undergraduates about how the assembly chooses to allocate its time.

Potential Solutions

  1. The Student Assembly should begin a discussion about what is considered ‘fair game’ for assembly discourse. The Student Assembly must recognize that resolutions and discussion periods should be limited only to those subjects that will directly affect undergraduates and their Cornell experience.

The executive team should ensure rules are followed by byline funded organizations and SAFC funded organizations. This will actually demonstrate the real legislative power the SA has.
